Swathi started learning Kuchipudi Dance from the age of 5 in Andhra Pradesh, India. She has completed Rangapravesam in very short period of time, at the age of 7. Swathi has been actively pursuing her interest in Kuchipudi Dance over the last 35 years. She has been teaching Kuchipudi Dance for the last 20 years. She runs a school in NJ called "Siddhendra Kuchipudi Art Academy" (www.kuchipudiartacademy.com). She has performed all over Indian participating in many prestigious dance festivals and shows. She has performed in major cities in USA and Canada. She has just returned from a successful trip to Sydney and Melbourne. She has portrayed many characters in dance ballets. Hers active interest in dance is reflected in her ongoing great dance performances. She is guiding her 2 sons in her footsteps to pursue this art form.
She is a versatile artist and has performed as numerous leading characters in productions such as Annamaya in Harikeetanacharya Annamayya and Ganga in Shiva Ganga, Padmavathi in Priyam Venkatesam, as Mohini in Mohini Basmasura, as Rukmini, Satyabhama and Narada in Sri Krishna Parijatam.
She is very well known for her performance in "Bhakta Prahalada" as Hiranya Kashipa and as Keechaka in "Keechaka Vadha". She also took part in production of "Kuchipudi Art Academy, Chennai" for 2008 "Dance Festival of Music Academy", in Chennai under the able guidance of Guru Sri Vempati Ravi Shankar. She has conducted various works shops for her students. She and 30 of her students have been a part of the Guinness Book of Records creation in 2008, in California, and with 42 students in 2010, in India.
Swathi had the privilege of learning from Gurus like Sri Satya Kumar, Padmasri Dr. Sobha Naidu and Sri Vempati Ravi Shankar
With her first own dance piece choreographed at the age of 16, Swathi has much choreography to her credit.
Smt. Sobha Naidu, today is one of the most outstanding exponents of Kuchipudi Dance. Her greatness lies in her total dedication to the exacting genre with classical base. A fiercely uncompromising purist, she is highly imaginative with a sense of deep involvement but without losing contact with contemporary taste and sensibilities. She has been Principal of Kuchipudi Art Academy at Hyderabad since 1980. Her major achievements are the Choreography and Presentation of the Ballets Vipranarayana, Kalyana Srinivasam, Sri Krishna Saranam Mama, Vijayosthuthe Naari, Ksheera Saagara Madhanam, and the latest Navarasa Natabhamini in which she was the main protagonist.
Her performances won accolades not only in the motherland but also all around the globe. Sobha has presented a series of performances at different venues in USA sponsored by the TANA. She represented India and performed in places like U.K, U.S.S.R, Syria, Baghdad, Kampuchea, Turkey, Hong Kong, Bangkok .Sobha also led a cultural delegation, on behalf of Gov. of India, to West Indies, Mexico, Venezuela, Tunis, Cuba followed by a visit to West Asia. She has been awarded the coveted title of "Nritya Choodamani" by no less an institution than Krishna Gana Sabha of Madras, followed by a prestigious award by Central Sangeeta Nataka Kala Academy in the year 1991. Wedded and dedicated to her art, she has rejected lucrative offers from the film industry with a feeling that art should be developed with its pristine purity ..
Sri Vempati Ravi Shankar hails from a family of prestigious artists and is the younger son of the Kuchipudi legend, Guru Dr. Vempati Chinna Satyam, and Smt. Vempati Swarajyalakshmi. Sri Ravi Shankar began learning Kuchipudi at the tender age of 7 under Smt. Bala Kondala Rao, a senior disciple of Dr. Vempati. After 10 years of intense, rigorous training under Smt. Bala and Dr. Vempati, Ravi came to the stage as a performer in his own right. Throughout the years, Ravi has imbibed the nuances and intricacies of Kuchipudi thru his father. He is a versatile artist and has performed as numerous leading characters in his father's
productions including Siva in Ksheera Sagara Madhanam and Hara Vilasam, Dushyanta in Abhignyana Sakuntalam, Arjuna in Kiratarjuneeyam, Rama in Ramayanam, and Ardha Nareeswara in Ardha Nareeswara .As a solo artist, Ravi has performed at many prestigious festivals and venues some of which include the Avignon Festival in France, the Netherlands World Theatre festival, the Russian Indian Dance Festival in the former USSR, and many more. Some of his accolades include the Natyakala Surya award in Chennai, the Siddhendra Puraskar from the state of Kerala, and the best male dancer award in the Natyakala Conference from Krishna Gana Sabha – Chennai. Ravi is also a well-known and respected guru in India and abroad. He started teaching at his father's school, Kuchipudi Art Academy - Chennai, in 1991. He has composed over 35 solo items, 1 major dance drama, (Nava Durga), and 3 thematic dance productions (Andhra Kala Vilasam , Visweswara Vijayam, and Bhavayami Raghuramam). Ravi is also an accomplished musician and is the disciple of the Carnatic vocal music legend, Dr. M. Balamurali Krishna. He has set and tuned numerous keerthanas, javalis and thillanas. Sri Vempati Ravi Shankar continues the vision of his father, Dr. Vempati Chinna Satyam, by propagating the art as a dedicated teacher, a captivating performer, and an innovative choreographer.
